    Assault

    Lyndhurst

    On May 29, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a 20-year-old Lyndhurst resident walking home from the Lyndhurst Train Station reported that two black males and one white male aged between 18-20 years old pushed him into a fence from the back and stole his $200 cell phone. The complainant saw the assailants flee in a small hatchback vehicle.

    Burglary/Theft

    East Rutherford

    On May 31, at approximately 7:12 a.m., an empty beer keg was removed from a loading dock at the Sheraton Hotel. The complainant reported the keg was placed on a green GMC pick up truck and stolen.

    On May 30, at approximately 3:21 p.m., a complainant on Main Street reported sometime after 3:00 p.m. someone entered his rear yard and stole three bikes. The man said he put the bikes in the yard and went inside his house. When he came back out 15 minutes later the bikes were gone.

    On May 28, at approximately 11:03 p.m., a man stated someone broke the passenger’s side door lock of his rental van while it was parked at the Fairfield Inn on Route 120 South. A gas-powered pressure washer valued at $1,353 was stolen from the van.

    On May 27, at approximately 10:41 p.m., a man stated his wife's earrings were taken from the hospitality room of the Sheraton Hotel sometime between 12:30 p.m. and the time of the report. The newlywed couple had used the room for a wedding ceremony that day and the earrings had been left on a table. When they returned later the room had been cleaned and the earrings were missing. The earrings were described as princess cut diamonds in a platinum setting and were valued at $4,750.

    Lyndhurst

    On May 28, at approximately 1 p.m., a complainant parked in the lot of the Courtyard by Marriott reported finding his 2006 Dodge Wagon with a broken rear window and an iPod and digital camera stolen from within.

    On May 25, at approximately 9:30 p.m., a complainant reported the theft of a green mountain bike from the rear of 425 Valley Brook Ave.

    On May 25, at approximately 10 a.m., a Delafield Avenue resident reported the theft of a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle valued at $9,500.

    North Arlington

    On May 25, at approximately 6:20 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2001 Toyota truck at 11 p.m. the previous night on River Road at Hendel Avenue. Upon returning to the vehicle, the victim noticed the driver’s side window was smashed out and a Fine Drive 400 GPS system, valued at $400, was stolen.

    On May 25, at approximately 6:24 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2005 Nissan Murano on Garden Terrace off of Ridge Road the previous evening. Upon returning, the victim noticed the driver’s side door lock had been pried open, which caused the windows to automatically go down. Unknown actors went through the vehicle and stole a Polaroid portable DVD player, valued at $100.

    On May 25, at approximately 7:45 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2007 Cadillac on Garden Terrace off of Ridge Road at 3:30 a.m. Upon returning later that morning, the victim discovered the driver’s side door lock had been pried and someone had entered the vehicle and stole a Blackberry Pearl cell phone valued at $260.

    On May 25, at approximately 7:54 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2002 GMC Yukon on Albert Street off of Ridge Road at 9 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning that morning, the victim found the driver’s side front window had been smashed. Unknown actors had rifled through the vehicle and stole a pair on sunglasses valued at $150 and several music CDs valued at $70.

    On May 25, at approximately 8 a.m. a victim reported last seeing a 1997 Honda Civic and a 2006 Honda Civic at 6 p.m. the previous night on Albert Street off of Ridge Road. Upon returning, the victim discovered unknown actors had broken into the 1997 Honda Civic by prying open the driver’s side window and stole a dual CD/MP3/WMA car stereo valued at $180. The actors also entered the 2006 Honda Civic. There was no visible damage to the vehicle and nothing was stolen, but a Club anti-theft device was taken off the steering wheel and placed on the back seat.

    On May 25, at approximately 8:24 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2006 Lincoln Town Car at 11 p.m. the previous night on Melrose Avenue off of Ridge Road. Upon returning, the victim discovered unknown actors broke into the vehicle by smashing the driver’s side window and stole two cell phone chargers, valued at $40.

    On May 25, at approximately 7:45 p.m., a victim reported parking a vehicle at 10 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning, the victim noticed unknown actors entered the vehicle and stole a Magellan Road Mate 800 GPS system valued at $300. There was no sign of forced entry to the vehicle.

    On May 30, at approximately 11:20 a.m., a victim reportedly left a handbag in the front seat of her car while parked at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 15 Schuyler Ave. She returned to find the handbag missing. The vehicle was locked, but the window was partially open. The bag contained a Dior wallet valued at $100 and $90 cash. Officers checked the area and were unable to locate the handbag.

    On June 1, at approximately 7:15 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2003 Toyota Camry on Garden Terrace off of Ridge Road at 7:30 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning the next morning, the vehicle was missing.

    Rutherford

    On May 26, at approximately 9 p.m., a man reported he parked his 2001 Oldsmobile on Meadow Road on May 24. When he returned two days later, the vehicle had been stolen.

    On May 27, at approximately 8 p.m., a man on Carmita Avenue reported that sometime during the last several days, unknown persons stole a two-ton boulder from his yard. The man stated his wife heard a lot of noise in the yard on May 23, but didn’t look outside. The boulder was valued between $2,000 and $3,000.

    On May 29, at approximately 3:24 p.m., a business on Veterans Boulevard reported unknown persons stole a large Waste Management Dumpster from their location.

    CDS

    North Arlington

    On May 25, at approximately 12:48 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Police stopped a four-door Oldsmobile and spoke to the driver, 36-year-old Shawn Kelley of Wharton. Police detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and observed open vials of cocaine on the passenger seat. After failing field sobriety tests, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated and possession of cocaine. Police searched the vehicle and found eight full vials of cocaine and eight empty vials. His vehicle was impounded and he was released on summonses.

    Criminal Mischief

    East Rutherford

    On May 27, at approximately 6:28 p.m., an officer on patrol spotted new graffiti on the side of a building at 407 Paterson Ave. The markings hadn’t been there the day before.

    North Arlington

    On May 25, at approximately 6 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2005 Toyota at 10 p.m. on Melrose Avenue off of Ridge Road the previous night. Upon returning, the victim noticed the passenger’s side window was smashed out. Unknown actors went through the glove box and center console of the vehicle, but nothing was stolen.

    On May 25, at approximately 7:08 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2003 Toyota Corolla on Albert Street off of Ridge Road at 9:30 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning the next morning, the victim noticed unknown actors smashed the driver’s side front window and rifled through the vehicle, but did not steal anything.

    On May 25, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a victim reported parking a 2007 Nissan Murano on Garden Terrace off of Ridge Road at 9 p.m. the previous night. Upon returning the next morning, the victim noticed the driver’s side door lock was pried open, but entry was not gained.

    Rutherford

    On May 27, at approximately 10 a.m., Kurgan Bergan Realty reported an unknown person smashed a large glass window on the office.

    On May 30, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a business reported a male subject picked up a planter in front of a store and threw it into the roadway. Officers contacted the man, 29-year-old Lyndhurst resident Robert Priester, and arrested him for criminal mischief after determining he had also damaged a table of shoes on display. Priester was issued a summons and released.

    DWI

    East Rutherford

    On May 30, at approximately 9:34 p.m., an officer saw a car stopped at the railroad crossing gates on Central Avenue. The car then backed up against the flow of traffic and turned right onto Poplar Street. The officer then turned on his lights, stopped the car and spoke with the driver, 24-year-old Matthew Leo of East Rutherford. The officer detected the odor of alcohol on Leo’s breath and asked Leo if he had had anything to drink. Leo said he had five or six beers after work and the officer then asked him to step out of the car to perform field sobriety tests. Leo was placed under arrest and charged with DWI.

    On May 26, at approximately 1:32 a.m., an officer on patrol observed a car heading the wrong way down Union Avenue between Van Winkle Street and Park Avenue. The car then made a U-turn in the middle of the road. The officer activated his lights, stopped the car and spoke with the driver, 34-year-old Douglas Barnet of Garfield. Barnet’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and the officer detected the odor of alcohol on his breath. Barnet, who said he had had six drinks that evening failed several field sobriety tests, was arrested and charged with DWI.

    On May 25, at approximately 11:45 p.m., an officer saw a car travelling above the speed limit in the middle lane of Route 17 South. The officer stopped the car and spoke with the driver, 32-year-old Franklyn J. Marzullo of Secaucus. The officer detected the smell of alcohol on Marzullo’s breath and saw that his eyes were bloodshot and watery. Marzullo was then asked to step out of the vehicle and perform several field sobriety tests. Marzullo was placed under arrest and was charged with DWI.

    Lyndhurst

    On May 25, at approximately 1:00 a.m., police arrived to a motor vehicle accident in front of 154 Fern Ave. Upon arrival, the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident, 22-year-old Michael Zbuchalski of Lyndhurst was arrested and charged with DWI.

    North Arlington

    On May 27, at approximately 8:48 p.m., officers responded to a report of a multi-vehicle accident with injuries on River Road near the Belleville Turnpike. Police treated the injuries and interviewed the drivers involved and were told 49-year-old Margot Pomiano-Valdivia of Silver Springs, MD was responsible for the accident. Police said Pomiano-Valdivia was incoherent and detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath. She was placed in an ambulance for injuries and transported to Clara Maass hospital for treatment. Her vehicle was impounded and she was issued summonses for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. She was left in the custody of the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

    Rutherford

    On May 23, at approximately 11 p.m., police responded to the scene of an accident on Pierrepont Avenue. There they discovered 30-year-old Lodi resident Michelle Donoghue, who had crashed her 1994 Nissan into two parked cars. Donoghue was arrested on charges of DWI, issued a summons and released to a responsibly party.

    Fraud

    East Rutherford

    On May 30, at approximately 8:15 p.m., a woman came to headquarters to report she was the victim of fraud. She applied for a part time work-at-home position as a "credit card processing agent" working for a company called www.officialcorp.com advertised on www.craigslist.com. She applied and received an e-mail informing her of her duties. On May 21 she received $5,559 from Official Corp., which is supposedly based in Russia. Her job was to transfer the money to her personal checking account and then purchase a money gram and transfer the money to Official Corp. She was to receive five percent of the total value of each transaction. She did this three more times on May 28, sending money grams in the amount of $7,685.29, $7,611.76 and $5,114.71. On May 28 she received a call from Bank of America informing her that it was closing her account because she had been transferring stolen money and that she was responsible for reimbursing the bank. Police informed her that prosecution would be difficult since the suspects are possibly from Russia. She was given the phone number for the FBI’s Newark office.

    On May 29, at approximately 11:15 a.m., a complainant reported his father purchased a saxophone for $1,651.57 from a resident of East Haven, Conn. via eBay. He sent a check dated April 25 to the Conn. resident, which was cashed on May 17. According to the complainant, the saxophone was shipped on May 3 but was never received. The father reported the incident to East Haven police. The complainant said he’d be back from England in July to file a formal complaint.

    Miscellaneous

    Lyndhurst

    On May 27, police issued Jonmatt Construction Corp. of Newark a township ordinance for working on Sundays and working without permits when they were seen doing work at a Kearny Street residence.

    Rutherford

    On May 31, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a resident on Mountain Way reported two male subjects distributing leaflets for roofing work despite the fact that their truck had no roofing equipment. Officers contacted 24-year-old Jason Cooper, of Roselle, and 35-year-old Mike Demetro, issuing both summonses for soliciting without a permit. Cooper was also issued a summons for obstructing after police determined his Social Security card was falsified. Both were released.

    Trespassing

    East Rutherford

    On May 26, at approximately 3:22 a.m., a man reported a possible burglary or trespassing taking place at Annabella’s on Hackensack Street in the rear of the building. An officer responded to the address and encountered 53-year-old William Edwards of Kearny behind the building. The officer identified himself and asked Edwards what he was doing. The officer then noticed Edwards attempt to conceal something in his right hand and when the officer ordered Edwards to show him what it was, he ran towards Hackensack Street and down Union Avenue. The officer caught up with him, held him down and placed him under arrest. The officer observed a glass pipe commonly used for smoking CDS in his hand before it fell to the ground and shattered. Edwards was taken to headquarters and charged with trespassing, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
