The following is the Editor's weekly letter.
This week marks the beginning of the freshest season in the area. The Rutherford Farmer’s Market comes to Williams Center Plaza now through October.
The farmer’s market is a perk so often overlooked. Foodies worldwide are rediscovering the benefits of buying food grown locally. Market produce is fresher than anything in the supermarket because farmers pick the vegetables and fruit at peak flavor and deliver that morning to your backdoor. Much of it is organic and free from pesticides. Farmer’s markets are good for the environment because delivery of the produce is fairly local saving in fuel. Farmers are also water and soil conservationists, which also helps the environment.
Because there is no middleman, the food is usually reasonably priced. It is also good for your local economy -- buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business and brings potential shoppers to the Rutherford’s downtown.
For those of us who grew up hitting the fruit and vegetable roadside stands, the farmer’s market brings back fond memories. Today’s farmer’s markets offer so much more, however. Shoppers can also purchase fresh breads, pies and cookies. Seafood and prepared chicken and beef dinners are available. Homemade pickles, olives and mozzarella are also offered.
Woman, children and seniors in need can also benefit at the market. For those who qualify, WIC and Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers can be obtained and used to purchase food.
Why not make Rutherford’s Farmer’s market a Wednesday tradition. You’ll be helping the environment and a local farmer, while getting the best produce around.
